Nigeria, UK Forge Stronger Alliance Against Insurgency

The Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, mni, CON, has emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relationship with the United Kingdom (UK) in the fight against insurgency.

During a meeting with a UK delegation led by Minister for Armed Forces and Veterans, Mr. James Heappey, Minister Badaru expressed appreciation for the UK’s support in safeguarding Nigerian waterways.

He acknowledged that security is a constantly evolving challenge.

Minister Badaru noted the importance of collaborative efforts between the Nigerian Military and the British Military in addressing the Boko Haram threat.

He called upon the Western nations, including the UK, to provide increased support to Nigeria, similar to their assistance to other countries facing security challenges.

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle MON, reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to combat insurgency and banditry, emphasising the need for close cooperation in areas such as capacity building, military personnel training, technology transfer, and the provision of modern equipment to counter the Boko Haram insurgency among others.

Earlier, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana MNI, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, highlighted the UK’s significant role as one of Nigeria’s foremost international allies.

He expressed Nigeria’s deep appreciation for the enduring relationship between the two nations.

In his remarks, Mr. James Heappey, the United Kingdom Minister for Armed Forces, explained that their visit aimed to tailor and enhance support for the Armed Forces of Nigeria in response to evolving threats and requirements.

This visit marks the first official courtesy call on the Ministers since their assumption of office on Tuesday, 22nd August 2023.
