Nigerian Military Highlights Significant Gains in Counter-Insurgency

The Defence Media Operations (DMO) has highlighted the ongoing significance of counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations throughout Nigeria in the pursuit of peace and the prevention of violent extremist groups from establishing safe havens.

In a press briefing conducted on Thursday, Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations (DMO), conveyed that the armed forces are steadfastly collaborating with supportive entities to combat any forces undermining the nation’s security and well-being.

During the week leading up to August 31, 2023, the military reported significant achievements:

* 39 terrorists were neutralised.

* 157 terrorists and 16 individuals involved in oil theft were arrested.

* 109 kidnapped hostages were successfully rescued.

* Oil theft amounting to N765,863,000.00 was thwarted.

Furthermore, the military made substantial recoveries:

55 assorted weapons and 96 assorted ammunition were retrieved.

Specifics include 12 AK47 rifles, one GPMG, one HK21 gun, one FN rifle loaded with 5 rounds of NATO ammo, 2 Dane guns, 3 fabricated rifles, one fabricated pistol, 3 locally made pistols, 11 AK47 magazines, 71 rounds of 7.62mm special ammo, 22 rounds of 7.62mm NATO, 2 rounds of 9mm ammo, one cartridge, one bandolier, 7 rounds 7.62mm special empty cases, 24 motorcycles, 13 mobile phones, 10 bicycles, and N881,700.00 in cash.

In the Niger Delta region, troops discovered and destroyed:

* 71 dugout pits.

* 36 boats.

* 83 storage tanks.

* 5 vehicles.

* 4 motorcycles.

* 58 cooking ovens.

* 5 pumping machines.

* 3 generators.

* 3 speedboats.

* 34 illegal refining sites.

Additionally, they recovered:

* 569,400 liters of stolen crude oil.

* 486,000 liters of illegally refined AGO.

* 59,500 liters of PMS.

Major General Buba emphasised the military’s unwavering commitment to conducting aggressive operations against violent extremist groups that pose threats to national security and the well-being of the citizens.

He added that the armed forces remain dedicated to their core mission and are prepared to adapt their strategies to better safeguard the nation while eliminating security threats.
