Resurfaced Tinubu Video Revives Debate Over Promise to Pay WAEC Fees

By Mohammed Ibrahim Abdullahi

A campaign video of President Bola Tinubu promising to pay the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees for all Nigerian students has resurfaced on social media, triggering fresh conversations over the implementation of the pledge.

In the video, recorded during the 2023 presidential campaign and obtained by INCNews247, Tinubu said his administration would remove the financial burden of WAEC registration by paying the examination fees of every eligible Nigerian child.

He explained that the proposal was part of his administration’s plan to improve access to education, reduce the number of out-of-school children and ease the economic pressure on parents struggling to fund their children’s education.

The resurfaced video has since attracted widespread attention online, with many Nigerians revisiting the campaign promise amid renewed concerns over the rising cost of public examinations and the affordability of secondary education.

While some social media users described the pledge as a reflection of the President’s commitment to education, others urged the Federal Government to provide an update on the proposed policy, saying its implementation would bring relief to millions of households.

The discussions coincide with growing public concern over recent examination registration costs from #27,000 to #50, 000, with education advocates warning that rising fees could further limit access to education for children from economically disadvantaged families.

The renewed interest also comes as stakeholders in the education sector continue to advocate increased government investment in public education and policies that would remove financial barriers preventing students from completing their secondary school education.
