TCN upgrades Apapa Road substation, triples capacity to 180MVA

The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN has upgraded its Apapa Road 132/33kV Transmission Substation in Lagos, increasing its capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of TCN, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, disclosed this on Monday at the formal commissioning of the upgraded substation in Lagos.

Abdulaziz said the project, sponsored by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in partnership with TCN, was designed to strengthen electricity transmission to one of Lagos State’s busiest industrial corridors.

He explained that the installation and energisation of two new 60MVA power transformers, alongside the deployment of modern Gas Insulated Switchgear, had tripled the capacity of the substation.

According to him, the upgrade would significantly increase the quantum of bulk electricity available to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company for onward distribution to consumers in Apapa Causeway, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, Tin Can Island and other critical commercial areas within its franchise.

“This translates to a significant increase in the quantum of bulk power available for Eko Electricity Distribution Company to offtake for onward delivery to its customers in Apapa Causeway, Ijora, Amukoko, Ajegunle, Apapa Wharf, Tin Can Island, and other critical commercial zones within EKEDC’s franchise area,” he said.

The TCN boss added that the project had also improved the quality of electricity supply while contributing to economic productivity in Lagos State and Nigeria.

He disclosed that the project was delivered by Takaoka Engineering Company Limited, a Japanese engineering and construction firm, under the Emergency Rehabilitation and Reinforcement of Lagos Transmission Substations project.

Abdulaziz said the grant agreement between the Federal Government and JICA was signed on November 23, 2018, while implementation commenced in 2019 after preparatory surveys and grant mobilisation by Yachiyo Engineering Company Limited.

He said the successful completion of the project would not have been possible without the support of the Federal Government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.

The TCN chief executive also commended the Lagos State Government for providing an enabling environment for the execution of the project.

He said the development underscored TCN’s commitment to modernising Nigeria’s transmission network, reducing technical losses and stabilising the national grid to support economic growth.

Abdulaziz expressed appreciation to JICA and the Government of Japan for the grant intervention, as well as the Federal Ministry of Power, Federal Ministry of Finance, TCN engineers, contractors and other stakeholders involved in the project.

He, however, appealed to the Japanese government and other development partners for similar grant support for other critical sections of the nation’s transmission network.

“I want to use this opportunity to respectfully appeal for similar grant support to be extended to other critical sections of our transmission network. This will enable TCN to continue to sustain and optimise transmission operations across the country in line with our mandate,” he said.

He described the commissioning as a celebration of progress and partnership, expressing optimism that the project would contribute to a more reliable electricity supply and a stronger economic future for Lagos and Nigeria.
