TDF Knocks ADC Over Budget Criticism

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The Democratic Front (TDF) has faulted the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) over its criticism of the Federal Government’s budgeting process, describing the party’s stance as a display of ignorance on public finance procedures.

TDF, in a statement signed by its Chairman, Danjuma Muhammad, and Secretary, Wale Adedayo, expressed surprise at what it called the ADC leadership’s misunderstanding of budgetary practices, despite their claimed experience in public administration.

The group specifically took issue with the ADC’s description of the rollover of 70 per cent of the 2025 capital budget into the 2026 fiscal plan as “fiscal confusion.”

According to the statement, the decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to roll over a substantial portion of the capital expenditure had been widely acknowledged by economic experts and Ministries, Departments and Agencies as a strategic move to curb the proliferation of abandoned projects and ensure continuity in government spending.

TDF said it was “disappointing” that the ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, failed to appreciate the impact of abandoned projects on infrastructure and economic development, despite his past experience as a cabinet member.

The group commended the Tinubu administration for prioritising the completion of ongoing projects, noting that abandoned projects had historically fuelled corruption and waste of public funds under successive governments.

It further urged the ADC to be objective in its criticisms, stressing that factors such as fluctuations in government revenue, shortfalls in crude oil production, and instability in global oil prices could necessitate adjustments such as budget rollovers.

TDF added that opposition leaders should demonstrate a better understanding of governance issues rather than politicising every policy decision.

It maintained that the implementation of the national budget under the Tinubu administration was not a cause for concern, but rather reflected a commitment to fiscal discipline and responsible planning.

The group also advised the ADC to focus on rebuilding its image ahead of the 2027 general elections instead of what it described as uninformed criticism of government policies.
