President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces in a move aimed at boosting troop welfare and strengthening the country’s security architecture.

The new salary structure, which will take effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant-Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.

The statement added that officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer would enjoy a 50 per cent salary increase, while personnel from Private to Staff Sergeant would receive an 80 per cent pay rise.

It noted that the new remuneration package would raise the annual wage bill for members of the armed forces from N660bn to N924bn.

The Presidency said the salary review reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel who continue to battle insecurity, including banditry, kidnapping and terrorism, across the country.

Tinubu, who commended the courage and sacrifices of members of the armed forces, said they deserved greater support for their role in safeguarding the nation.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

He pledged that his administration would continue to prioritise troop welfare while modernising the armed forces through the provision of modern weapons and technological equipment needed to effectively discharge their responsibilities.

“Our administration believes that no nation can achieve greatness without security. We therefore remain resolute in mobilising all military and law enforcement assets to eliminate security threats and protect the lives and property of all Nigerians,” Tinubu stated.

The President also urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government’s appreciation for their dedication and patriotism.

“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
