TMV Lauds UBEC over N100bn Disbursement of Unaccessed Education Grants

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The Tinubu Media Volunteers, TMV has commended the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC for mobilising and disbursing N100bn in previously unaccessed matching grants to states, describing the move as a major boost for basic education across the country.

The group said the intervention was significant because several state governments had failed to provide the counterpart funding required to access the grants meant for improving primary and junior secondary education.

In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Chukwudi Enekwechi, and Secretary, Segun Ogedengbe, the group said the disbursement formed part of the implementation of UBEC’s 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint aimed at delivering measurable improvements in the nation’s basic education system.

According to the statement, UBEC Executive Secretary, Aisha Garba, recently highlighted the commission’s achievements during a press luncheon in Abuja, including the construction of 4,600 classrooms, renovation of more than 6,100 classrooms, provision of 2,780 toilets and 678 boreholes, as well as the distribution of 334,000 pieces of school furniture nationwide.

TMV said the milestones reflected the impact of the Federal Government’s education reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The group noted that matching grants under the Universal Basic Education programme ordinarily require states to provide 40 per cent counterpart funding before accessing the Federal Government’s contribution.

It, however, observed that many states had, over the years, failed to meet the requirement, leaving substantial intervention funds unutilised.

“It is gratifying that under the present administration, the commission mobilised as high as N100bn, which we believe will go a long way in helping it deliver on its mandate,” the statement read.

The group also attributed the commission’s performance to reforms that have strengthened transparency, project monitoring and data-driven decision-making.

It added that the release of the funds, despite the inability of some beneficiary states to fulfil their counterpart funding obligations, demonstrated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving access to quality education.

TMV described the intervention as unprecedented, saying it underscored the Federal Government’s determination to invest in the education of future generations.

The group urged UBEC to sustain its drive for accountability and effective service delivery, expressing confidence that the commission’s reforms would continue to yield positive outcomes in the education sector.
