The outgoing Chairman of the Offa Descendants Union (ODU), Minna Branch, Alhaji Toye Lawal, has recounted the achievements and challenges recorded during his tenure, as he officially bowed out of office today, at a colourful inauguration and award presentation ceremony held in Minna, Niger State.
Delivering his farewell address titled “The Journey So Far,” Lawal expressed gratitude to God, his family, and members of the Union for their unwavering support throughout his stewardship.
Recounting his journey, the outgoing chairman said he assumed leadership of ODU Minna Branch in September 2014, and that his initial two-year tenure was extended to four years in line with the Union’s constitution.
He explained that following a unanimous endorsement, he was re-elected for another term, serving until 2025.

During his administration, Lawal said the branch recorded significant progress, including the creation of key standing committees such as the Transport Committee, Mosque Committee, Hall and House Committee, and Absolute Resolution Committee, which enhanced internal organisation and dispute resolution.
“We strengthened the Union’s financial base, opened a bank account, and ensured transparency and accountability in all transactions. We also settled internal disputes amicably,” he said.
He recalled that in 2021, the Union deliberated on the sale of a property used as a vehicle garage in Offa, adding that the issue was successfully resolved through collective decision-making.
Lawal highlighted the successful hosting of the Offa Day Celebration in Minna on September 28, 2022, which was the first of its kind since 2000.
He expressed gratitude to all individuals and clubs who contributed to the success of the event.
“With God’s help and the support of our members, we hosted a memorable Offa Day in Minna. It was a proud moment for all Offa sons and daughters in Niger State,” he said.
Lawal thanked Almighty Allah for the grace to serve and for sustaining him and his team throughout their years in office
He appreciated his parents, wives and children for their patience and encouragement.
“I thank my wives and children for their prayers and sacrifices. I also appreciate all members of ODU for their cooperation and solidarity during my time as chairman,” he said.
He commended the elders and leaders of the Union for their guidance and support, noting that their counsel helped him steer the organisation through difficult moments.
Lawal paid tribute to the late Vice Chairman of the branch, Mallam Abdulrazak Abdulsalam, and others who lost their lives in the July 15, 2021, Jamba motor accident near Offa, Kwara State.
“May Almighty Allah have mercy on their souls and grant them eternal rest. We remember them today with gratitude and prayers,” he said solemnly.
He particularly appreciated Alhaji (Dr.) Kamar Alimi and other benefactors who provided financial assistance for community development initiatives during his tenure.
Lawal also acknowledged the contributions of several social clubs, including Iwajowa Social Club, Moremi Solidarity Club, La’are Social Club, Iyeru Okin Social Club, Ijakadi Social Club, and Offa Youth Club, among others.
He expressed deep appreciation to the Union’s legal adviser, Barrister Maroof Mustapha, for his unwavering support and legal guidance throughout his administration.
“I cannot end this speech without recognising Barrister Mustapha, whose dedication and legal expertise helped us resolve many sensitive issues. May Allah continue to bless him,” he said.
