2023 Census: MINILS Partners NPC

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS) in Ilorin, Kwara State, is partnering with the National Population Commission (NPC) to ensure a successful National Housing Census in Nigeria.

The Director General of MINILS, Comrade Issa Aremu, made this known during an interactive session with the leadership of the NPC.

He commended the NPC for its commitment to the exercise and said that the collaboration would increase the inputs into the production process.

Comrade Aremu highlighted the importance of the census and explained that the headcount was initiated during the British colonial era to determine the number of citizens that the colonial government had to take care of.

He also noted that MINILS was commissioned in 1983 and had a monopoly mandate to conduct worker education, and that the partnership with the NPC was an opportunity to promote knowledge, literacy, and understanding.

While responding, the National Chairman of the NPC, Alhaji Nasir Issa Kwarra, urged Nigerians to join the Commission’s bid to provide reliable demographic data through the forthcoming 2023 census.

He emphasised that Nigeria’s population was its greatest asset and that it must be harnessed for national development.

He pointed out that relying on data from a census conducted 16 years ago for a country hosting a significant proportion of the world’s population was counterproductive, and that the data generated from the 2023 census would be crucial for local government governance, socio-economic planning, and development.

Kwarra assured Nigerians that the Commission was committed to delivering an accurate, reliable, and acceptable census that would be relevant in the drive towards sustainable national development.

He expressed confidence that the prospect for an accurate and reliable census appeared brighter than ever.
