2027: APC drafts Kankia into presidential campaign council

By Kaosara Olayemi Oladimeji

The All Progressives Congress, APC has appointed its National Legal Adviser, Murtala Aliyu Kankia, as Secretary, Legal, of its 2027 Presidential Campaign Council.

Kankia’s appointment places the ruling party’s top legal officer at the centre of its presidential campaign as the APC begins to assemble its machinery ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The development is part of the newly constituted campaign structure expected to coordinate the party’s legal, political, mobilisation, security and communication operations across the country.

As Secretary, Legal, Kankia is expected to provide legal guidance to the campaign and coordinate issues relating to electoral regulations, campaign activities, political advertising, disputes and other legal matters that may arise during the electioneering period.

His appointment is considered significant as he currently serves as the APC National Legal Adviser, giving him a direct link between the party’s permanent legal structure and its presidential campaign machinery.

The campaign council is expected to operate across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with Kankia’s responsibilities extending to ensuring that the activities of the campaign comply with relevant laws and electoral guidelines.

The legal desk will also be expected to anticipate potential legal challenges, advise campaign officials and coordinate responses to disputes that may emerge before, during and after the elections.

A former Zamfara State Governor and Senator, Abdulaziz Yari, has been named Director-General of the presidential campaign council, while other senior party members have been assigned responsibilities in various departments.

The emerging structure covers key areas including legal affairs, political mobilisation, security, intelligence and communications as the APC prepares for a nationwide campaign.

Kankia’s dual role is expected to strengthen coordination between the party’s national leadership and the presidential campaign, particularly on matters involving electoral compliance and litigation.

The 2027 elections are expected to generate legal contests ranging from campaign violations and party procedures to challenges arising from voting, collation and declaration of results.

The APC’s legal machinery will therefore be required to prepare for potential disputes while ensuring that the party’s campaign operations remain within the provisions of the law.

The appointment also comes as political activities ahead of the 2027 elections gather momentum, with parties beginning to strengthen their campaign structures and mobilise supporters across the country.

With the presidential contest expected to be closely fought, the APC’s decision to place its National Legal Adviser in a senior campaign position underscores the importance the party attaches to legal preparedness alongside political mobilisation.

Kankia is expected to work with the campaign leadership, party officials and legal teams across the country to provide strategic counsel throughout the electioneering process.

The appointment effectively places the APC’s principal legal officer on the frontline of its 2027 presidential campaign, where legal strategy, compliance and rapid response could become critical to the party’s electoral plans.
