Nigeria has once again taken the global spotlight for its strides in digital governance and open government reforms, clinching two prestigious awards at the 2025 Open Government Partnership (OGP) Global Summit held in Spain.

The country, represented by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in collaboration with civil society organisation Dataphyte, emerged winner of the Regional Award for Africa and the Middle East, and also made history as the overall global winner in the Digital Governance category.

The feat placed Nigeria ahead of 42 participating countries and 160 submitted commitments at the summit, earning the nation international recognition as a trailblazer in transparency, accountability, and citizen-driven governance through technology.

Speaking on the achievement, NITDA described the awards as a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence in the global digital governance space and proof of what can be achieved when government and civil society work hand in hand to promote openness and innovation.

According to the agency, the recognition stemmed from Nigeria’s strong policy direction and bold commitments to using data-driven solutions to enhance public sector accountability and citizen engagement.

NITDA noted that under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, it has continued to drive initiatives that make governance more participatory, transparent, and inclusive.

INCNews247 reporte that the winning commitments showcased at the summit reflected Nigeria’s ongoing push for a citizen-centered digital ecosystem—anchored on accessibility, inclusiveness, and openness.

Through such policies and platforms, the country has been working to strengthen trust between government and the governed.
