The Nigerian Army has announced plans to resettle Tatyough, a community in Benue State that has long been deserted due to insecurity, by the first week of February 2026.
The development was made known by the Commanding Officer of COAS Intervention Battalion XI, Lieutenant Colonel Donatus Otobo, while hosting Defence Correspondents on an operational media tour to the headquarters of Operation Whirl Stroke in Makurdi.
Otobo said the relocation of displaced families to their ancestral home has gained momentum following sustained military operations that restored peace and tranquillity in the area.

“Tatyough, which has been deserted for a very long time, will come alive again,” he said, adding that troops have worked relentlessly to secure the community ahead of the residents’ return.
Corroborating him, locals Victor Tor and Martha Tyo told INCNews247 that the improved security environment was a result of ongoing operations, including support from the wider Operation Whirl Stroke framework, which has helped stabilise communities across the state and encouraged displaced persons to begin returning to their villages.
INCNews247 reports that thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Benue have begun returning to their ancestral communities following enhanced civil‑military cooperation, routine patrols, and clearance operations that have reduced threats in many rural settlements.
Also, in addition to military engagements, confidence‑building measures and partnerships with local leaders have contributed to the improved security atmosphere, paving the way for residents to reclaim their homes and resume their livelihoods, particularly farming.
The resettlement plan includes coordinated security patrols, liaison with traditional leaders, and logistical arrangements to ensure a safe and sustainable return for the displaced families.
