The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN and the African Development Bank, AfDB have provided classroom furniture to pupils of Zaria Community School, Jaja, in Kaduna State, as part of efforts to support host communities affected by transmission infrastructure projects.
The furniture, comprising desks and chairs, was handed over to the school on Wednesday by contractors handling TCN’s NTEP-TS1 Lot 1 project, which is financed by the AfDB.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Principal Manager, Project Management Team, Kaduna Sub-Region, Engr. Onaga Jacob Ugochukwu, said the intervention went beyond the company’s corporate social responsibility obligations.

He said the provision of classroom furniture was intended to support education and strengthen relations between the transmission company and communities hosting its infrastructure.
“When we build transmission lines, we are building for the community. When we equip their classrooms, we are building the community itself,” Ugochukwu said.
He added that providing pupils with a more comfortable learning environment could improve their educational experience and help nurture future professionals.
Receiving the furniture, the District Head of Jaja, Alhaji Abdullahi Muhammed, commended TCN, the AfDB and the contractors for extending the benefits of the project to the community.
He said the intervention demonstrated that the organisations recognised the needs of residents beyond the construction of transmission infrastructure.
Muhammed pledged the community’s continued cooperation and support for the protection of electricity transmission facilities in the area.
Also present at the ceremony were the Principal Manager, Health, Safety and Environment, Ahmed Rufai Sani, and a Senior Manager with the Project Implementation Unit at TCN’s corporate headquarters, Engr. Afeez Kareem.
The NTEP-TS1 Lot 1 project forms part of efforts to expand Nigeria’s electricity transmission infrastructure, while the provision of classroom furniture represents a community-focused intervention associated with the project.
