The Association of Corporate Online Editors, ACOE has urged Nigerians to strengthen national unity, patriotism and democratic participation as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The association also called on citizens to participate actively in the 2027 general elections, stressing that voters had a crucial role in determining the country’s future through the democratic process.
The Chairman of ACOE, Sola Akingboye, made the call in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja to commemorate the independence anniversary.
Akingboye, while congratulating Nigerians at home and in the diaspora, said the anniversary provided an opportunity for citizens to reflect on the country’s journey, achievements and challenges since independence.

He urged Nigerians to remain committed to peaceful coexistence irrespective of their ethnic, religious, political or geographical differences.
According to him, Nigeria’s diversity should be seen as a strength and an opportunity to build a more inclusive and prosperous nation.
The ACOE chairman said active participation in elections remained essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring accountability among elected representatives.
He urged political parties, civil society organisations, the media and other stakeholders to promote issue-based campaigns and peaceful engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
Akingboye also cautioned Nigerians against violence, hate speech, misinformation and other actions capable of undermining peace and democratic stability.
He said the media, particularly online platforms, had an important responsibility to provide credible information and promote responsible public discourse.
The chairman said ACOE would continue to support responsible journalism, national unity and democratic values, urging Nigerians to use the anniversary to renew their commitment to the country’s development.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome its challenges and realise its potential.
