DHQ Raises Alarm Over New Terrorist Group ‘Lakurawas’

The Defence Headquarters, DHQ, has sounded the alarm over the emergence of a new terrorist group, Lakurawas, in the North-West region.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed this in Abuja today while briefing journalists on the military’s efforts against insurgency.

Lakurawas originated from the Republic of Niger following a coup that disrupted military cooperation between Nigeria and Niger.

“The new terrorists infiltrated northern Sokoto and Kebbi States from the Niger Republic and Mali axis, exploiting difficult terrains to spread their ideology,” Buba explained.

The group initially gained acceptance from locals who thought they meant well but failed to report their movements to authorities.

However, the military has declared some members wanted and is taking action to degrade the terrorists through intelligence gathering, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

Despite the recent loss of Chief of Army Staff, General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, Buba assured that the military remains committed to ending terrorist activities. “We will not allow his passing to derail our focus. Instead, it motivates us to honor his legacy as a great warrior.”

Buba emphasized that the military’s strategy remains to undermine terrorist groups’ capabilities. “We are working to ensure the safety of citizens and will continue to work decisively to eliminate terrorists and insecurity.” The military has opened a surrender corridor for willing terrorists, urging citizens to provide useful information to support their efforts.
