Finally, Nigeria Joins BRICS as Partner Country

The Brazilian Foreign Ministry has officially announced Nigeria’s admission as a partner country in the BRICS alliance.

This development brings the total number of BRICS partner countries to nine, with Nigeria joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

In a statement released on Friday, the Brazilian government welcomed Nigeria’s decision to join the BRICS partnership, citing the country’s substantial population, economic influence, and active role in promoting South-South cooperation and reforming global governance.

These issues are reportedly key priorities during Brazil’s current presidency of the BRICS grouping.

The BRICS alliance, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been expanding its membership to include like-minded countries.

The partner-country category was formally established at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024.

Reports from the summit indicated that Nigeria had joined the grouping as a partner country, a development also confirmed by Eche Abu-Obe, the former spokesman of the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Nigeria’s admission as a BRICS partner country is expected to enhance the country’s engagement with the grouping and foster greater cooperation in areas such as trade, investment, and sustainable development.
