The Medical Department of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has conducted a health sensitisation and screening programme for employees at its Abuja Regional Office, urging workers to embrace routine medical check-ups to prevent life-threatening diseases.

The exercise, held on Wednesday, forms part of the company’s ongoing commitment to promoting the health and well-being of its workforce through preventive healthcare initiatives.

According to TCN, the programme, which is being implemented across offices under the Abuja Region, is aimed at encouraging healthy living while providing medical screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar and hepatitis tests.

Speaking during the sensitisation session, the Assistant Manager, Medicals, Nurse Jenifer Akubuobi, educated staff on the dangers of non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, diabetes and cancer, describing them as “silent killers” because they often develop without obvious symptoms.

She stressed the importance of regular medical examinations, noting that early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and long-term disease management.

Akubuobi explained that many chronic illnesses remain undetected until they reach advanced stages, urging employees to prioritise routine health screenings.

Medical personnel also advised workers referred for further evaluation to keep their hospital appointments, while those already receiving treatment for chronic conditions were urged not to discontinue their prescribed medications even when they feel better.

The team further encouraged staff to adopt healthier lifestyles by eating balanced diets, consuming hygienically prepared meals and engaging in regular physical exercise.

They also warned against the indiscriminate use of unverified herbal concoctions and highlighted excessive intake of salt and sugar, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption as major risk factors for preventable diseases.

The company said the sensitisation programme is part of its broader efforts to promote preventive healthcare and ensure a healthy workforce through continuous health education.
