The Democratic Front, TDF has endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s approval of a new investment framework for Nigeria’s deep offshore oil fields, describing the initiative as a bold step towards unlocking the country’s vast petroleum resources.

The group said the framework could attract an estimated $50bn in new investments into the oil sector while strengthening Nigeria’s position in the global oil and gas market.

The Chairman and Secretary of TDF, Danjuma Muhammad and Wale Adedayo, respectively, stated this in a statement on the initiative.

The group said the President’s decision demonstrated his determination to consolidate the gains of ongoing reforms in the petroleum sector.

It said the deep offshore fields had remained largely underdeveloped despite their significant production potential, partly due to difficulties in attracting the huge capital required for offshore projects.

“President Bola Tinubu’s decision to unlock $50bn in new investment in the deep offshore oil fields underscores his determination to consolidate the gains of his ongoing reforms in the oil sector,” TDF stated.

The group noted that the deep offshore fields offered greater prospects for crude oil production than marginal fields but had remained largely dormant under previous administrations because of the difficulties associated with attracting investors.

According to TDF, Tinubu’s interventions and management of the country’s oil resources since assuming office have triggered renewed investment interest in the sector.

It cited the Final Investment Decision by Shell Petroleum Development Company on the $5bn Bonga North deepwater project in December 2024 as one of the major developments recorded under the administration.

The group also pointed to the proposed Final Investment Decision on the $10bn Bonga South West project as further evidence of renewed investor interest in Nigeria’s deepwater oil assets.

TDF said the new Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Projects Incentives (Tax Remission) Order, 2026, represented a departure from the previous project-by-project negotiation approach.

It said the framework provided clearer eligibility criteria, implementation procedures and a more predictable investment structure for investors.

“Rather than the previous slow project-by-project negotiation framework, the Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Projects Incentives (Tax Remission) Order, 2026 provides for more transparent eligibility criteria, clear implementation processes and a durable investment architecture for investors on a long-term basis,” the group said.

TDF described the initiative as a major step towards attracting private capital into Nigeria’s capital-intensive offshore oil industry.

The group said increased investment in deep offshore operations would expand crude oil production, strengthen government revenue and improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in the international oil market.

It also commended Tinubu for what it described as the application of his professional experience to governance and the attraction of multinational investors into the Nigerian petroleum sector.

“We laud the President for bringing his very rich professional experience to bear on governance, thereby attracting major multinational oil investors and infusing global best practices, transparency and accountability into the hitherto sluggish oil sector,” TDF said.

The group expressed confidence that continued implementation of the reforms would strengthen Nigeria’s position as a leading investment destination in Africa’s oil and gas industry.

TDF maintained that the new investment framework, if effectively implemented, would help unlock Nigeria’s offshore petroleum potential and contribute significantly to the country’s long-term economic development.
