Tinubu Group Faults NDC Over ‘Fake Promises’ Claim to Athletes

The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum, TSF has dismissed allegations by the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu makes “fake promises” to Nigerian athletes, insisting that the Federal Government has begun fulfilling commitments made to sportsmen and women.
The group, in a statement issued and signed by its Chairman, Ahmad Sajoh, and Secretary, Danjuma Sada, described the allegation as misleading and inconsistent with verifiable facts.
According to the statement, the Tinubu administration has demonstrated a track record of implementing reward packages announced for outstanding Nigerian athletes.

The forum recalled that following the Super Eagles’ campaign at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, President Tinubu approved a reward package comprising national honours, houses and land allocations for members of the team.
It noted that beneficiaries had since received title documents and certificates, which it said reflected the government’s commitment to fulfilling the promises.
The TSF also stated that members of Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, had received title documents for the houses promised by the President alongside their national honours.
It added that the National Sports Commission had confirmed that the cash component of the reward package was being processed through the appropriate government financial institutions.
The group further cited the reward package announced after the Super Falcons won the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, describing it as one of the most generous ever approved for a Nigerian team.
According to the statement, the package includes national honours, cash awards and three-bedroom apartments, adding that the Federal Government had confirmed that implementation was ongoing through the relevant agencies.
“These are verifiable facts. They contradict the NDC’s sweeping claim that the President merely makes promises without taking steps to fulfil them,” the statement read.
While urging the relevant agencies to conclude the implementation of all outstanding components of the reward packages, the group maintained that Nigerian athletes deserved prompt delivery of benefits announced in recognition of their achievements.
The TSF also argued that the Tinubu administration had made greater progress in rewarding athletes than previous governments.
It said successive administrations had made similar promises that remained unfulfilled for years, while the current administration had commenced implementation within its tenure with documented evidence of houses, title documents and national honours already delivered.
The forum urged Nigerians to disregard what it described as politically motivated narratives, insisting that the government’s actions contradicted claims that the President only made empty promises to athletes.
