DHQ Denies Allegations of Misconduct by Amnesty International

By Alabidun Shuaib AbdulRahman

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed allegations made by Amnesty International accusing the Nigerian army of illegally detaining girls and young women who escaped Boko Haram captivity.

In a statement signed by the Director of Defence Media Operations (DDMO), Major General Edward Buba on Monday, the DHQ refuted the claims, asserting that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) adhere strictly to international law.

Buba reiterated the professionalism of the AFN, stating, “The AFN is a professional military force that operates within the ambit of International law of armed conflict and humanitarian law.”

He urged Amnesty International to provide concrete evidence to support their accusations, affirming that the military has self-regulating mechanisms to address any proven misconduct.

The statement, released following a press conference by Amnesty International in Abuja on June 10, 2024.

“The AFN, led by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, has zero tolerance for indiscipline,” Buba stated.

He mentioned that standing court martials are in place to deal with any misbehavior by military personnel.

The DDMO assured that the AFN remains focused on its mission to defeat terrorism, undeterred by what he described as “self-serving statements” aimed at lowering troop morale.

He, therefore, affirmed the military’s willingness to engage constructively with Amnesty International to address any issues. “We will continue on the trajectory of conducting operations assiduously to defeat terrorism in our nation,” he said.
