FACT-CHECK: Viral Video of Police Men Dragging Handbag from Traveller is from 2021

A VIRAL video which showed Nigerian Police officers snatching a travellers handbag on the highway is circulating online, especially on X(formerly Twitter).
In the 26-second clip, two police officers wearing uniforms are seen checking a travellers bag behind a black jeep with others surrounding them. Another officer was seen holding the hand. The Traveller is repeatedly slapped and dragged before the clip goes blank.

An X user,@agnes_nwanneka postedthe clip on January 2, 2025, with the caption, Nigeria Police on Benin-Onitsha road attempting to take the traveller’s dollars found in his handbag.
As of press time, the claim has garnered 312,400 views, 560 comments, 2,300 reposts, reactions and 379 bookmarks.

Police Dragging Handbag With Travellers On Benin-Onitsha Road
THE FINDINGS
Findings by INTERCONTINENTAL NEWS 247 show that the claim is old footage that dates back to 2021.
INTERCONTINENTAL NEWS 247 extracted screenshots of the footage and subjected them to Reverse Image Search. The results show that the clip is old dating back to 2021.
Unofficial: Support Nigerian Military, a Facebook page posted the clip on November 25, 2021. The caption reads, From OUR INBOX. Police on Benin-Onitsha road attempting to take a traveller’s dollars found in his handbag.
On another Facebook page, Terry Grandee postedthe clip on November 14, 2021, with the caption, Police tried to rob travelers along Benin-onitsha road after seeing dollars in his bag.
Delta police spokesman, SP Bright Edafe dismissedthe viral clip saying the clip had been over two years, stating further that the extortionate officers were sanctioned.
His caption on the clip reads, Reason why social media must be regulated. This video was posted as early as 2021. A formal press release was issued and the officers sanctioned. Here we go again.
THE VERDICT
The clip of Police officers extorting dollars from a traveller is old footage as findings showed that the footage has been online for the past three years.
