INEC Seeks Increased Funding Ahead of 2027 Elections

By Mohammed Ibrahim Abdullahi

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), has called for increased and sustained funding for the commission to strengthen its operations and ensure the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections.

Amupitan made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, Dr. Mohammed Bello Shehu, in Abuja, stressing that adequate funding was critical for INEC to effectively discharge its constitutional responsibilities.

According to him, the commission requires sufficient financial support to conduct elections, sustain continuous voter registration, deploy electoral technology and carry out other pre-election and post-election activities.

The INEC chairman noted that the increasing cost of election logistics, technology deployment, personnel management and other operational requirements had placed significant pressure on the commission, adding that improved funding would enhance its operational capacity and readiness for future polls.

Amupitan also expressed concern over the welfare of the commission’s workforce, warning that inadequate funding had contributed to the loss of experienced personnel through migration and other factors.

He said the trend could create a skills gap capable of affecting the commission’s efficiency if not urgently addressed.
