Meet UNILORIN’S First Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, Prof. Abosede R. Omowumi Babatunde

Abosede R. Omowumi Babatunde is the Unilorin’s first Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies. She is also the first female Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ilorin, Nigeria.

She holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. She was designated the best graduating student in her cohort for the Master’s programme. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria.

Professor Babatunde has been awarded several distinguished academic fellowships, including the African Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship (2010), the American Council of Learned Societies Research Fellowship in Peace Studies (2013) at the Consortium for Peace Studies, Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is a 2017/18 Fellow of the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society, Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany. She is a 2017 Fellow of the Brown International Advanced Research Institute (BIARI), Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, United States. In 2019, she was a Guest Researcher at the Nordic Africa Institute, Uppsala, Sweden. She is a 2023 Landhaus Fellow at the Rachel Carson Centre for Environment and Society, Ludwig-Maximilians University, Munich, Germany. She is a 2024 Afox Visiting Research Fellow (Africa-Oxford Initiative) at Merton College and the African Studies Centre, University of Oxford, United Kingdom. She is a former member of the Governing Council of the International Peace Research Association (IPRA).

She is also a member of numerous academic and professional associations, including the Society for Peace Studies and Practice; African Studies Association; American Political Science Association (APSA); Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA); African Peacebuilding Research Network of the Social Science Research Council; West Africa Peace and Security Network (WAPSN); Affiliate Member, West Africa Research Council (WARC); Advocate Member, Global Association of Human Trafficking Scholars; Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx); and German Studies Association (GSA) Environmental Studies Network.

Professor Babatunde is the Coordinator of the international programme of the Centre for Peace and Strategic Studies. She has chaired numerous committees and also serves as Desk Officer for the Centre’s engagement with government agencies and civil society organisations.
