NASS Supports 18 Years Admission Age to Universities

By Roselyn James

The National Assembly has announced that it will draft strong law to uphold the 18-year-old admissions age limit to postsecondary education institutions.

Sen. Muntari Dandutse, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and the TETFund, made this statement on Tuesday during the continuous observation of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) in Abuja.

Other senators from his committee and their equivalents from the House of Representatives’ Committee on Higher Education accompanied the senator from Katsina South on the visit.

Although age shouldn’t be a barrier to postsecondary education, Dandutse stated that the Minister of Education’s suggested 18-year-old age limit is inviolable.

Sen. Sunday Karimi, who is his counterpart and represents Kogi West, stated that a law was in place requiring candidates to be at least eighteen years old to be admitted.

The law has always existed, but in light of current events, “we are going to amend it and make it robust,” he claims.

In particular, everyone should have access to education; just because you’re forty, fifty, or sixty years old, doesn’t mean you can’t enroll in college.

Although there is an age minimum and restriction, you cannot enroll in a university at the age of 12, 13, or 14. Age shouldn’t be a barrier.

“You have to be six years old before you can start primary school, twelve years old before you can start secondary school, and eighteen years old before you can start university,” stated Karimi.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prof. Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, had issued an order prohibiting candidates under the age of eighteen from being admitted to postsecondary schools.

He denounced the actions of certain parents who were pressing their minor children to apply to universities.
