Taliban Declare Public Holiday Marking One Year of Taking Power in Afghanistan

A national holiday has been declared today in Afghanistan to mark the first anniversary of the Taliban seizing power in Kabul.

Taliban members and supporters have been parading the streets and hanging black and white flags but the anniversary comes during a deepening economic and humanitarian crisis, with many men unable to find work and most girls’ secondary schools still closed.

A senior figure in the anti-Taliban National Resistance Front NRF, former First Vice-President Amrullah Saleh says they were ready to stop armed resistance if a mechanism is put in place to ensure a referendum or an election is held.

Saleh said recognition of the Taliban by Western governments would intensify the conflict in Afghanistan but the West must help Afghans create a legitimate state.
